In the leaked audio clip, uploaded by Twitter user Başçalan onto YouTube Friday night, Interior Minister Ala is heard ordering the İstanbul police chief to ignore a summons issued by İstanbul Public Prosecutor Celal Kara, who was leading one part of a sweeping graft investigation which rocked the country since it broke on Dec. 17. The corruption scandal has implicated close associates of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Kara summoned a police chief to question his role in the corruption scandal. The interior minister is heard ordering the İstanbul police chief to not allow the suspected police chief to testify in person or in writing, telling him instead to ignore the summons from the prosecutor.
“Tell him, ‘We don’t recognize you [your authority]’,” the interior minister is allegedly heard telling the İstanbul police chief.
Ala then said he would speak with the justice minister to put pressure on the prosecutor to withdraw his summons.
